Samoëns & Grand Massif

Samoëns
Clare Mann wrote for the Daily Telegraph....
"Samoëns is a breath of fresh mountain air. The French proudly describe it as one of their monuments historiques, that just happens to be attached to a great ski area.

The centre of Samoëns is traffic free, and has a beautiful square dominated by a magnificent lime tree. The main street is a delight, full of gourmet shops offering mountain ham, local cheese and mouth-watering pâtisserie. Every Wednesday there is a wonderful market selling local produce. There is also a handful of gorgeous Savoyard interior designer shops offering Alpine bric-a-brac: old skis, retro skiing photographs, antler lamps, "polar bear" skin rugs, and pretty china decorated with hearts. It's enough to make you want to buy a chalet on the spot."

Walking is easy - the village is flat and there are well marked routes along the river Giffre or up in to the low hills. Samoens has a very good theatre and art centre with a host of activities and musical events throughout the season. Quality spa treatments are offered by several local hotels.
Grand Massif
Samoens is in the Grand Massif - 4th largest ski area in France. 5 villages - all with their own distinct ski terrain: Samoens, Flaine, Carroz, Morillon and Sixt. 131 runs - 15 Green | 52 Blue | 51 Red | 14 Black | 3 ski parks - 78 ski lifts and 256 km of piste, a vertical drop of 1800m and Europes longest blue run, the 14km Las Cascadas, which runs through a national park back to Sixt, and some fantastic natural bowls for off piste skiing.

Beginners - Samoens has one of the best beginner areas in the Alps. A great selection of greens and blues, ideal for small children or rusty adults. We like that you can catch the gondola straight back.

Intermediate - A great selection of blues and reds, tree lined or semi off piste, which is great for this level. You can start skiing from the top of the Massif Express at 1600m, or carry on to the bowl at Flaine.

Advanced - The area has some great off piste along with some challenging blacks. The off piste is relatively safe being largely in the natural bowl of Flaine. There are some great guides available in the area.
